DEAR CDX...
Dear CDX: Your blog has not been updated in forever... plus it is May and you still have your April playlist up. WTF!?
Okay, okay... I know! Alright? I know. I'm working on it. Nobody reads this damn blog anymore anyhow. Maybe you should check out Perez Hilton or maybe just look at a funny picture...

APRIL CDX PLAYLIST

I guess I should probably start by introducing myself. I’ll stick to pertinent info, as to not bore everyone. I’ve been the manager of a music store in Portland, Maine for over 10 years. Music has always been an obsession for me. Due to that obsession, I spend lots and lots of time seeking, watching and discussing. I tend to learn the most from fellow audiophiles, other bands/musicians, and often my computer (blogs and such). As you will soon see, the music I mainly listen to, falls into the following categories: indie bands, sad songs, folk, psych-folk, stoner rock, electro-pop, electronic, German techno, electro, hip-hop and experimental electronic. I hope everyone enjoys my playlist and I encourage you to let me know what you think (whether good or bad). Thanks! Oh and Mike, thanks for asking me to do this.
Ola Podrida “Instead” – This was my featured song on myspace for a very long time. I don’t seem to get sick of it. The cover of their album is almost identical to Interpol’s latest. Both are photos of an exhibit at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles County.
Jens Lekman “Into Eternity” – A favorite from “Night Falls Over Kortedala”. Jens has a way with words that grabs me. I love his sad, lovelorn lyrics and Bacharach-esque melodies.
Seabear “Libraries” – I first discovered this Icelandic band while flipping through 7” s at Amoeba in San Fran. The name caught my eye…I wonder why? Hmm… Anyway, they remind me a little bit of Arcade Fire. Oh and I’m sort of a sucker for guy/girl singing.
Radio Dept “Pulling Our Weight” – Radio Dept is one of the better artists on Labrador records; home to Club 8, Legends, Sambassadeur and many other cool Swedish indie bands. I love walking around town listening to this song. His voice is very soothing.
Tunng “Bullets” – They came through Portland (Maine) last year and played an amazing show. Elements of electronics set the stage for the bands beautiful harmonies. The whole album is good, but this song is a stand out.
Pluramon “If Time Was On My Side” – Pluramon’s latest release “Monstrous Surplus” (karaoke kalk records) is a beautiful collection of shoegazer pop. With vocals by Julee Cruise (Twin Peaks), its hard to not get sucked in by this song.
Roisin Murphy “Dear Miami” – Formally of the group Moloko (mid 90’s), Roisin gives Kylie Minogue a run for her money. Her lyrics are a bit weirder and more abstract than the latter. I mean come on…this song is a letter to Miami about global warming and sea level change! Wow…now that’s a pop song.
Beach House “Heart of Chambers” – Newest single from one of my favorite new bands of the last two years! They are a Baltimore duo composed of Alex Scally (guitar/keyboards) and Victoria Legrand (vocals/organ). Victoria’s voice is classic. A must have!
My Brightest Diamond “Disappear” – Once just a member of Sufjan Stevens band, Shara Worden’s solo work stands on its own. Another classically trained musician gone indie with a striking voice. There are some pretty amazing videos of her on youtube singing Karaoke! Her new album is due in June.
Chriss Sutherland “Perez” - Chris is a friend of mine from Maine. He is currently in the band Fire on Fire (Young God Records), but for years his voice was an integral part of an amazing local band called Cerberus Shoal. To me, this song reminds me of the Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Aeroplane Over The Sea”, which is a classic album. Side note: Lately I am all about the banjo…can’t get enough of my roommate playing in our apartment.
Grand Archives “Miniature Birds” - Warning: you may continue to hum or whistle the melody to this one long after it plays. Great song from this new band featuring an orginal member of Band of Horses.
Lightspeed Champion “Tell Me What Its Worth” - Devonte Hynes clearly decided this new project was going to sound nothing like his last band, the Test Icicles. Leaving behind the thrash punk for indie power pop. I love that the name comes from a series of comic strips he made in his math books as a teenager.
Sons & Daughters “The Bell” – The new album from this Scottish band is much more straight forward rocking that their previous albums. This time around they had Bernard Butler (Suede) producing. I initially found out about them because Adele used to be in the band Arab Strap…whom I adore.
Atlas Sound “Quarantined” – This is a side project of Deerhunter’s frontman, Bradford Cox. Found sounds and hushed spoken word appears over washed guitar and electronics. Atlas Sound is a bit lighter and easier on the ears than his main project. Originally, I didn’t want to buy into the hype of Cox’s music…but, alas, he won me over.
Trembling Blue Stars “Idylwild” – Originally meant to just be a side-project, one off album, Trembling Blue Stars continues to put out beautiful songs. This is one of the singles from their last album “Last Holy Winter.”
Caroline “Sunrise” – Caroline’s voice and minimal electronics reminds me of some of my favorite Bjork songs. She recently released an album of remixes (itunes exclusive) that adds that extra bit of energy to her often sparse arrangements. Check it out!
Santogold “L.E.S.Artistes” – Obvious comparisons will and have been made to M.I.A., but Santogold will soon make a name for herself this year. Her new album, out in April, sees her working with Switch (produced M.I.A.’s “Kala”), Spank Rock, XXXchange, Disco D and Diplo among others. Can’t wait to hear more.
Don Juan Dracula (feat Sally Shapiro) “Take Me Home” – I love Sally Shapiro. Her voice is so smooth, childlike and angelic. Although this Norwegian band doesn’t seem to have created that many killer songs yet, Sally manages to help this one along. Sounds like it is a lost gem from the early 80’s synth underground.
Glass Candy “Beatrific” – Glass Candy are Portland, OR based dark-disco masters. Ida No and Johnny Jewel have been making hard to catagorize, beautiful music for 10+ years. Their new album is called “Beat Box” and its essential.
Ssion “Clown” – This song was recently featured on Perez Hilton’s site (much to my surprise). I originally came across this Kansas City band last year after hearing their song “Street Jizz” on one of the blogs I frequent. Gender confusion, gay sex, ridiculous videos, dirty electro ditties, elaborately weird outfits & drawn-on thick moustaches are their trademark…Go watch the ‘Street Jizz’ and ‘A.S.A.P’ videos now on their myspace! I guarantee it will blow your mind.
Schneider TM “The Light 3000” A great electronic cover of a Smiths song. I know that CDX loves covers and this is one of my favorites.
Cut Copy “Lights and Music” – It has been WAY too long to wait for something new from these guys since they released “Bright Like Neon Light.” Hopefully the whole album will be as good as this song is! Cut Copy is on Modular records and I highly recommend anything from Modular (except the Glimmers!).
The Notwist “Good Lies” – This is the first single released from The Notwist’s “The Devil, You & Me” since their excellent album “Neon Golden” more than 5 years ago. Markus Acher has been busy with several other projects in the meantime (13 & God, Ms John Soda, et al), but none has gotten me as excited as this project’s follow up!
Sascha Funke “Mango” – Can’t wait to go hear Sascha dj with Ellen Allien at Studio B in Brooklyn in May! I’ve never seen him play, but Ellen never disappoints. Whenever I read the title track it reminds me of the character from SNL.
Kelley Polar “Entropy Reigns (In The Celestial City)” – This New Hampshire based, classically trained violinist, is signed to Environ (Morgan Geist’s Label) and once collaborated with Metro Area on several tracks. All of these artists are responsible for excellent house/electro tracks.
Apparat “Hold on” – Apparat is a producer who owns an excellent german techno label called Shitkatipult Records. He recently collaborated with Ellen Allien (Bpitch Control) as the Orchestra of Bubbles, which I highly recommend! Raz O’hara adds vocals to this track.
Chromatics “In The City” – Label-mates to Glass Candy, the Chromatics’ sound is equally haunting. Both bands are on an excellent compilation called After Dark. Seek it out!
Sambassadeur “Final Say” – This is another Labrador band who recently released a new album. The title seemed fitting to end my first playlist.
Please feel free to email me with any feedback!
